Aquatas was established in 1987 and is one of Australia's largest Atlantic salmon farmers and processors. The Tasmanian aquaculture industry, which includes the farming of salmon, is currently in a period of high growth and popularity being both environmentally friendly and ecologically sound. Tasmania, an island state, makes the perfect setting for an aquaculture industry and as a result has gained a reputation as a state that produces quality gourmet seafoods.

Aquitas image 1 Aquatas holds seven farm sites, three of which are currently being used. Here the salmon are grown until they are mature and ready for harvesting. In 1994 Aquatas became the first salmon farmer in the Australian industry to harvest salmon twelve months a year. This was achieved through technological developments by Aquatas' hatchery. Tasmania has gained a reputation for the finest quality Atlantic salmon in the world due to its perfect water temperatures, pollution free environment and absence of disease.

Aquatas complements this natural quality with superior smoking techniques and strict quality control, producing world class smoked salmon products. In the smoking process a blend of world renowned Tasmanian hardwoods are used to lightly smoke and enhance the flavour and texture of the fish. Today Aquatas is at the forefront of the smoked salmon industry and each year the company's output and reputation for quality smoked salmon grows.

Aquatas image 2 Aquatas' wide range of smoked seafood products and year round availability has helped to build the company's strong foundations. These products include marinated hot smoked salmon, traditionally smoked salmon and trout along with hot smoked Albacore tuna and trout. The hot smoked salmon is an Aquatas speciality and is marinated in four unique flavours, Mediterranean, Apricot, Teriyaki and Creole. Unlike traditional smoked salmon, this salmon is cooked while it is smoked, resulting in tender moist fillets.

Recently Aquatas introduced Chilled Tasmanian Salmon Caviar to its growing product range and is continually testing new product lines. Aquatas' ability to supply a variety of packaging sizes suited to the food service industry, caterers and consumers alike has allowed it to gain access to numerous and diverse markets.

Aquatas image 4 Exports have recently boomed for Aquatas, with the company successfully negotiating new export smoked sales to countries such as Korea, Japan, Singapore, Taiwan, Indonesia and Hong Kong. These compliment Aquatas' existing fresh exports to Japan.
