-a trendsetter in the Swedish kitchen

There are few Swedes who have such great influence on the Swedish kitchen as Karin Fransson – from Germany .

By adding fresh herbs and fantasy, she has taken the traditional Swedish cooking to a new dimension.

Karin Fransson was born in southern Germany in 1951. During a holiday in the seventies she ended up in the small town of Borgholm on Öland, a small island just off the Swedish east coast. There she met the owner of the local Hotel Borgholm, Owe Fransson, and fell in love with both him and the island.

Without any formal education, she took control of the hotel kitchen and turned it into one of the most famous in Sweden . Very soon the word started to spread and food connoisseurs from all over Sweden talked passionately about Hotel Borgholm and its new, exciting chef.

Karin Fransson's cooking is based on the mixing of fresh herbs, locally grown vegetables and meat from local farmers. She has built a network of producers of high quality grocery and also inspired the new identity of Öland. The once sleepy holiday island has turned into a centre of gourmet experiences.

And when she's not cooking, you are bound to find Karin Fransson in the heart of the kitchen, in front of her small pots filled with tasty herbs and exciting smells, her experiment lab of future flavours.

One week end every autumn a great number of people come to Öland to celebrate the “Harvest Moon”. This festival establishes the identity of Borgholm and Öland as major centres of gastronomy.

In 1992, the Swedish king Carl XVI Gustav appointed Karin Fransson for the yearly award “Citizen of Öland”, because she ha “put Borgholm on the culinary map”.

With both her feet solidly in the Öland soil, she has also become one of the most famous media chefs in Sweden . Karin Fransson is well known in both television and radio. She is often seen in national TV and for more than 10 years she has played a significant part in the radio program “Meny”, the most popular cooking program on the air in Sweden .

In Christmas time, many Swedish newspapers and magazines visit Borgholm to write about Karin Fransson's creative and inspiring “jubord” – traditional Swedish Christmas tables. She is also the author of a book – “Karin Franssons Örtabok” – where Swedes find inspiration for their own cooking.

Karin Fransson has brought the international gourmet world to Borgholm, inspired by the original tastes of Öland.
